Reno is a city in and the county seat of Washoe County, Nevada, United States. Reno, Nevada is located 26 miles north of the capital of Nevada, Carson City, and 22 miles northeast of beautiful Lake Tahoe, and is adjacent to Sparks. The 2000 census put Reno’s population at 180,480, second highest in the state, behind Las Vegas. The latest population estimates for Reno put their population around 214,000, an impressive increase over 2000, but Henderson Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas, has grown even faster and now exceeds Reno in population. The population of western Nevada near Reno now has a population of 650,000 and is growing rapidly.

Reno was once the legal gambling capital of the United States, but was eclipsed by Las Vegas in the early 1960′s. Reno has seen a few casinos come and go, and unlike Las Vegas as one closes its not automatic that another, bigger hotel will take its place. That said, Reno is home to some outstanding casinos, including the Peppermill and Atlantis. Reno has also become an attractive housing market for Californians looking for more reasonably priced real estate, and for anyone looking for decent weather.

The most notable characteristic of Reno weather is the frequently wide spread between the daily high temperature and the daily low temperature. This spread is about 25 degrees farenheit in the winter and widens to over 40 degrees in the summer. Towards the end of July the daily high in Reno is typically over 90, while the low is barely above 50. Reno’s high elevation and low humidity are the major causes of this wide difference in daily temperatures.

Winters are cool in Reno, with high temperatures in the mid-40′s and lows in the low to mid-20′s. Snow is common, but heavy snows and blizzards are not, although Reno averages one ten inch snowstorm per decade over the past 100 years. Great skiing is close by in the Lake Tahoe area. The spring weather in Reno tends to be dry and cool. Daytime high temperatures start in the 50′s in the beginning of spring and climb over 70 by the end of spring. Summers are warm but rarely oppressive. July and August are the driest months of the year in Reno. The temperatures drop and the chance of rain climb in the fall, especially near the end of the season.

Reno is an interesting little big town located in the desert of Nevada. No, it is certainly not as popular as its Las Vegas sibling, but it can definitely hold its own and offers a wide assortment of entertainment options aside from gambling. However, it should be noted that gambling does remain the biggest draw for Reno but it is certainly not the only thing this desert jewel has to offer visitors.

The largest nature attraction in Reno is Lake Tahoe. The lake has over 70 miles of shoreline to see. You can camp, hike, and trudge around the countryside for fun. Lake Tahoe has a bevy of fun outdoor activities and is a great place to spend your vacation when you have lost most of your money gambling at the casinos in Reno.

Interested in fun, wet, wild activities? Go to Wild Waters in Sparks. It has access from Interstate 80. Wild Waters offers activities that the entire family will love. You can play miniature golf or race go-karts. Yummy food is available at Wild Waters. Now if you don’t feel like making a drive to popular spots around Reno, there is no need. Whitewater Park on the Truckee was created by the city of Reno for kayakers. It is located conveniently downtown and even if you are not into kayaking, walking along the water is a great way to calm down after losing at blackjack.

You can also add to your artistic experience by visiting the great number of art studios and galleries. Stop by the galleries on 1st street, South Virignia Street, and California Avenue. They are an exciting adventure for any art admirer. They offer impeccable Southwestern art plus art from all over the glob. You can soak in the local culture here. If you want to head the more traditional activity route, you can spend time in the Reno casinos. Wedding services such as chapels are available just like they are in Las Vegas. As you can see, Reno has so much to offer. Take a trip to Reno today.

Reno is the county seat of Washoe County, Nevada. The documented 2000 census reveals that Reno had a total population of 180,480, becoming the third largest city in Nevada, after Las Vegas and Henderson. Recent estimations place the population of the city at 207,000. Reno lies twenty-six miles north of the Carson City, which is Nevada’s state capital, and 22 miles north east of Lake Tahoe in the high desert. Reno is recognized as The Biggest Little City in the World. At here have five typical operations that you can join with pleasure.

The Great Reno Balloon Race

If you’re in the neighborhood when September rolls around, Reno features the Great Balloon Race at the Rancho San Rafael Park. A tradition for about 25 years, you don’t have to be a flight enthusiast to enjoy this sight, which is free for all to enjoy.

Enjoy the Water

Numerous seasonal and year-round outdoor activities are offered in Reno, especially when it comes to the local bodies of water. Three major marine gems are located in the city, including the Truckee River, Pyramid Lake, and Lake Tahoe. While swimming is a popular activity, locals and tourists also enjoy water-skiing, fishing, wakeboarding, parasailing, and jet-skiing. Visitors also flock to the Truckee River to enjoy a day of kayaking.

Enjoy the Snow

A trip to Reno in the winter brings you close to an enjoyable atmosphere that makes skiing and snowboarding a real joy. There are eight major ski resorts to consider paying a visit to, such as Diamond Peak, Alpine Meadows, and the Squaw Valley Ski Resort. The snow also allows ice-skating, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

National Automobile Museum

To enjoy a walk into automotive history, this museum is the perfect place to visit, especially if you have a thing for old cars. Here, vehicles made in the late 19th century to beyond the 1960s are on display (many of which once belonged to the late casino owner, William Harrah). Some of the items you may come across include a V-16 Cadillac, as well as a Jeep SUV with a V-12 Ferrari engine.

Get Married

If you can’t wait a second longer to solidify the union between you and your sweetheart, then Reno has the solution. Quick marriages are offered in Reno, where no waiting period is required. Plus, if you are 18 years or older, you don’t need your parents permission to get hitched in Reno, which offers marriage licenses from 8am to midnight at the Washoe County Courthouse.

Often referred to as the “Biggest Little City in the World,” Reno has a reputation, as well, for providing adventurous gaming opportunities and more. Many casinos have come and gone, but one of the biggest crowning achievements of Reno is serving as the birthplace of the casino empire, Harrah’s Entertainment.

Home to world class hotels, golf courses and resorts Reno has made itself a tourist hotspot over the years. Families and couples alike enjoy the world class facilities that Reno has to offer. From ski resorts to comfortable lodges, there is no shortage of quality accommodation in Reno and people from all over the world can easily reach Reno thanks to its international airport. Located just 35 miles away from Reno is Lake Tahoe. Just like Reno, Lake Tahoe too has made a name for itself when it comes to adventure activities and Casinos. Lake Tahoe is unique in that its Southern shore is more popular with people that enjoy Casinos with a little bit of adventure activities thrown in for good measure. However people that are planning a vacation in Reno and Carson City usually prefer the Northern shore of Lake Tahoe. In fact after Reno and Lake Tahoe Carson City is perhaps the most popular tourist destination.

The capital of Nevada, Carson City is know for its rich history and is a must visit place for people that want to taste a bit of the Wild West of lore. Carson City offers 24 hour Casinos, museums and the now world famous Kit Carson Trial. No visit to Reno or Lake Tahoe is complete without a visit to Carson City. If you are planning a vacation to Nevada, don’t just restrict your self to Las Vegas. Places like Reno, Lake Tahoe and Carson City have so much more to offer in terms of diversity, adventure sports and history that it would be a shame if you restrict your visit to Nevada to just Las Vegas. Even if your principal goal is to enjoy the world class Casinos of Nevada, Reno and Lake Tahoe offer some quality casinos, at the same time they also add to the value of your vacation making it truly memorable.

Reno Festivals

Festival of Trees :A virtual smorgasbord of twinkling lights, crafts, live entertainment, and children’s activities. Christmas is magical, even in the balmy West.

Great Reno Balloon Race :Over 125 of the nation’s top balloonists take to the skies over Reno for this annual September event. Events begin early in the day with the Dawn Patrol, a glorious sight of hundreds of balloons ascending in the pre-dawn darkness.

National Championship Air Races :This is the world’s longest running annual air race. Daily competitions include one or more races from Biplane, Formula One, Sport, and AT-6 racings classes. Aerobatic stunts, sky-writing, and military jet displays are also featured at this exciting event. Held at Stead Field located approximately 10 miles north of downtown Reno.

And some Reno Attractions

Wild Island : Located just west of Reno, this water park has a tropical feel and features a tide pool and a plethora of water slides. There is also a 36-hole miniature golf course, bumper cars, a video arcade, and food vendors.

Wild West Museum : This museum takes the visitor on a walk down memory lane to times when cowboys, miners, and outlaws populated the streets. The Wild West Museum features a variety of Old West memorabilia including antique guns, Native American and Cavalry displays.

Wingfield Park : This island park located downtown is actually five parks in one; comprised of East Island, Brick Park, Bennett Park, West Island and Bicentennial Park.
